The Hatch Sleep Clock is designed to improve your sleep. Not grade it.
Let go of the screens, the stress and the scores. Hatch Sleep Clock tracks your breathing patterns, micro-movements and sleep stages from your nightstand — 97% accurate. No rings, wristbands or anything in between you and the goodnight. In the morning, you learn what really matters: the sounds that help you sleep deeper, why shifting your bedtime 15 minutes might be worth a try. Small improvements, drawn from your actual habits, to steadily, surely build better ones.
How do I start tracking?
After setting up your Hatch Sleep Clock, you can begin tracking as soon as you get into bed!
To set up your Hatch Sleep Clock:
- Open the Hatch Sleep app and connect to your Hatch Sleep Clock using the prompts in the app.
- Place the Hatch Sleep Clock on your nightstand, at roughly mattress height
- Position it within about 2-4 feet of where you sleep
- Make sure the Hatch Sleep Clock is pointed directly at your chest when you are laying down in bed- this is a very important step for accurate sleep tracking
- Make sure there are no large objects between the device and your sleeping area- the sensor works through the air - nothing needs to touch you or be attached to you
- Complete your plan set up in the Hatch Sleep app
- As you go crawl into bed, your tracking starts
Once it's in position, the device will begin learning your sleep patterns over time. The first few nights are a calibration period, so don't be alarmed if the data during this period doesn't look accurate. You can provide feedback to the app and you will see your sleep patterns and insights after 7 days of use. You will also see recommendations to help you at bedtime. The recommendations will change daily based on your previous night's sleep.
What does the Hatch Sleep Clock Track?
Each evening your Hatch Sleep Clock will track your sleep. When you wake up, here's the information you will see in the app:
- When you got into bed
- When you fell asleep
- Sleep stages throughout the night
- When you woke up
- When you got out of bed
- How your night compared to your plan
Your Hatch Sleep Clock doesn't have:
- There are no sleep scores that will cause you to stress rather than rest
- Does not track HRV or heart rate (no wearable)
- The clock will not track audio or visual data of any kind
- Does not diagnose sleep disorders
Does your sleep tracking seem inaccurate?
We've worked hard to make sure that the Hatch Sleep Clock is accurate! The motion sensor technology behind the Hatch Sleep Clock is clinically validated. The technology has 97% sleep detection accuracy compared to clinical polysomnography at 99%.
A couple of things worth knowing:
- These accuracy figures reference the underlying sensing technology, which is also used in medical settings to support people with insomnia and sleep disorders
- The sensor emits just 84 microwatts of power - roughly 12,000x less than a WiFi router and 486x below the ICNIRP regulatory limit
If you're finding that sleep sensing seems off, you will want to check the position of your Hatch Sleep Clock; paying attention to the distance, angle, and height of your Hatch Sleep Clock.

What about privacy and safety?
Safety:
Your safety is really important to us! The Hatch Sleep Clock uses a built-in motion sensor - similar in concept to the sensor that turns on a light when you walk outside. It detects micro-movements and breathing from your nightstand without any contact.
A few things that may be helpful to know:
- No camera, no microphone - the sensor is entirely motion-based
- Very low power output - the sensor emits just 84 microwatts, which is roughly 12,000x less energy than a typical WiFi router and 486x below the ICNIRP regulatory limit
- Non-contact - nothing needs to touch you, and there's nothing to wear or charge
Sleeping next to this device exposes you to far less electromagnetic energy than your phone on your nightstand.
The motion sensor on the Hatch Sleep Clock is always active - it's built into the device and can't be turned off from the app. If you'd prefer it not to sense your sleep, the simplest workaround is to point the front of the device away from your bed. Since the sensor detects motion and breathing from the direction it's facing, angling it away will prevent it from picking up your sleep data.
Privacy:
We understand that sensing technology raises reasonable questions about privacy, so we want to be straightforward about how it works.
The Hatch Sleep Clock's motion sensor:
- Has no camera and no microphone - it cannot see or hear you
- Detects only micro-movements and breathing patterns - not audio, not images, not identity
- Only communicates on your local network - we do not record transmissions or access your home network
- Is designed to support your sleep routine, not to collect or share personal data beyond what's needed to surface your sleep insights
We take privacy seriously and never share your information. You can review our full privacy policy here: https://www.hatch.co/privacy-policy
Can Hatch Sleep Clock track more than one person?
The Hatch Sleep Clock's motion sensor is designed to track one primary sleeper. If you share a bed, the sensor will do its best to detect the person closest to the device, but results may vary depending on your setup and sleeping arrangement.
For the most accurate experience, we recommend positioning the clock on the nightstand of the person whose sleep you'd like to track, as close to their side of the bed as possible.
