Your Hatch Sleep Clock uses built-in micro-motion sensors to detect your sleep stages throughout the night. No wearable required. No cameras, no microphones. All we detect is your breath and movement.

What the Hatch Sleep Clock tracks
Hatch Sleep Clock uses finely-tuned motion sensors that measure micro-movements and breathing to identify when you're awake, in light sleep, in deep sleep, or in REM. This data appears in the Sleep tab as your sleep stages each morning.
How sleep stages are detected
During sleep, your body moves and breathes differently in each stage. Deep sleep is typically very still. REM involves more subtle movement. Light sleep falls in between. The device calibrates to your patterns over the first few nights and becomes more accurate as it learns your rhythms.
How to position your Hatch Sleep Clock for the most accurate tracking
Because there's no wearable, your Hatch Sleep Clock needs a clear path to you. Placement — especially angle — makes the biggest difference in tracking accuracy.

Height
Mattress level or above — stacked books work great if your nightstand sits lower.
Distance
Within 4 feet of your pillow.

Angle
The single most impactful factor. Point the device directly at your torso. When you're lying down, it should be aimed at roughly the middle of your chest. A clear, unobstructed path between the device and you.
What else can affect your tracking?
- Shared beds: The device is calibrated to detect the person closest to it. During setup, you'll answer a few questions about your bed size and sleeping arrangement to help dial this in.
- Pets: A pet sleeping on or near the bed can introduce movement that affects your data. If accuracy feels off, it's worth considering where your pet is spending the night.
- Unusual nights: Illness, alcohol, and certain medications can affect sleep stages and may produce data that looks different from a typical night.
How to read your data
Sleep sensing data is most useful as a pattern over time. While we share a precise measurement for every single night, the goal is to help you understand your general sleep habits. We'll highlight trends and insights based on how you actually slept. These get richer and better over time as Hatch Sleep Clock learns your rhythms.
