At Hatch, safety is our top priority and we've designed your Hatch to be used in a nursery, a child's room, or during travel, etc. The decibel level is very dependent on the environment — factors like room size, placement, and surfaces play a big role in the equation.
Because of this, giving a precise decibel number is difficult. For example, carpeting in a nursery can reduce the decibel level by 50-70%. Distance from your baby can reduce decibel levels as well. At 5-10 feet away from a sleeping baby, in an average-sized nursery with carpeting, the absolute maximum volume is below 50 decibels.
We completely understand wanting to make sure anything you use around your baby is safe. If you want to learn more about safely using sounds while your little one is sleeping; we recommend reviewing a 2023 report issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics about children and noise exposure.
In summary, the report highlighted the benefits of infant sleep machines, but mentioned ensuring their safe use. Safe use recommendations include locating the sound machine as far away as possible from the infant and setting the volume as low as possible. Every baby (and every household) is a little different, so if you have specific concerns, it’s always a good idea to check in with your pediatrician before using a sound machine.
