If the Hatch Sleep app is searching but never finds your device, this article will help- our Wi-Fi devices do go through a "Bluetooth" connections step in order to "discover" the device before preparing to connect to your Wi-Fi.
These steps cover Rest+, Rest Mini, Restore, Restore 2, Restore 3, Rest 2nd gen, Rest+ 2nd gen, Hatch Baby, and Hatch Sleep Clock, that can't be "discovered" when setting up your device.
Please note that these devices only utilize Bluetooth to connect during the registration process. Once registered, they utilize WiFi to connect, and more than one phone can connect at the same time.
Not sure which device you have? Which Hatch device do I have?
First, check the following
- Make sure your phone or tablet's Bluetooth is enabled.
- iPhone and iPad users: make sure the Hatch Sleep app has permission to use Bluetooth. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and confirm Hatch Sleep is turned on. Apple requires this separately from the Bluetooth toggle itself, and your device will not appear in the app without it.
- Android users: make sure you have Location Services turned on. Android requires location access before any app can search for Bluetooth devices. We never use your location. Why location services must be enabled for Android users
- Position yourself within Bluetooth range (within approx. 30 feet from your device) and be aware that thick walls and doors can impede Bluetooth connection. For setup, standing in the same room within about 10 feet works best.
- Force close the Hatch Sleep app, then reopen it.
- iPhone or iPad with Face ID: swipe up from the bottom of the screen, hold, then swipe the Hatch Sleep card up.
- iPhone or iPad with a Home button: double-click the Home button, then swipe the Hatch Sleep card up.
- Android: open your recent apps, then swipe the Hatch Sleep card away.
Make sure your device is in pairing mode
Most devices will not appear in the app until you put them in pairing mode. Find your model below, then search again in the app.
Rest+
Make sure you've pressed the two inner-most buttons on the Rest+ (volume up and brightness up) at the same time. The clock display will briefly say "ON". This allows the Rest+ to be accessible over Bluetooth. If the display never says "ON", the press didn't register. Try again, holding both buttons for two full seconds.
Rest 2nd gen, Rest+ 2nd gen, and Restore
Press and hold the button with the two arrows (the Bluetooth connection button) on the bottom of your Hatch for two seconds. The clock display will briefly say "ON". This allows the Hatch to be accessible over Bluetooth. If the display never says "ON", try again and hold for two full seconds.
Restore 2, Restore 3, and Hatch Sleep Clock
Press and hold the button with the two arrows (the Bluetooth connection button) on the bottom of your Hatch for two seconds. The LED indicator over the Bluetooth connection button should turn green, and the clock display will show a dot going in a circle. This allows the Hatch to be accessible over Bluetooth.
Still not connecting?
Try each of these in order, then reopen the app and search again.
- Turn your phone or tablet's Bluetooth off, wait five seconds, then turn it back on. A stale Bluetooth session is a common cause and this clears it.
- Restart your phone or tablet.
- iPhone or iPad with Face ID: hold the side button and either volume button until the power off slider appears, drag it to the right, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone or iPad with a Home button: hold the side or top button until the power off slider appears, drag it to the right, wait 30 seconds, then hold the button again until the Apple logo appears.
- Android: hold the power button, tap Restart. If your phone has no Restart option, tap Power off, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
- Confirm no other phone or tablet is already connected. Your Hatch will only pair with one device at a time during setup. If a partner's phone or an older phone of yours is nearby, close the Hatch Sleep app on that device and move it out of the room.
- Reset your Hatch device. This clears the device's saved connection and lets it start fresh:
Your device appeared, but Wi-Fi setup won't finish?
Good news, Bluetooth did its job. The remaining issue is with your network, not your device. Your Hatch requires a 2.4GHz network to complete setup.
Have a Rest or a Grow?
These devices connect differently and aren't covered above.
- Rest connects over Bluetooth every time, and never uses Wi-Fi. See Bluetooth connection troubleshooting tips for Rest.
- Grow is battery powered, and a connection problem is often a power problem. See Grow connection troubleshooting.
